Setup ("we," "our," or "us") is a software tool that helps the people in your life set you up with the people in their life. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Setup mobile application and website at gosetup.org (collectively, the "Service"), how we use that information, who can see it, and what choices you have. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of your information as described here. This Privacy Policy is incorporated into our Terms & Conditions.
Account information. When you create a Setup account, we collect your name, username, email address, phone number, password (stored as a hash by Firebase Authentication), and an optional profile photo.
Single profile. If you choose to be matched yourself, you provide a date of birth, gender(s), the metropolitan area you live in (and an approximate latitude/longitude derived from it), your dating preferences (preferred gender(s), age range, distance preference), and a profile photo.
Matchmaking information. If you act as a matchmaker, we store the singles you add to your portfolio, the comatchmakers you connect with, your match suggestions, your decisions and endorsements inside Rooms, and any private notes you write about a single. Notes are visible only to you.
Match data. When a match is created, we store the singles involved, the matchmakers credited, the status of the match (pending, introduced, declined, etc.), and any post-date ratings the singles provide.
Communities, friendships, and Rooms. We store the Communities you join, the comatchmaker connections you form, the Rooms you create or participate in, and any friend or community join requests you send or receive.
Notification preferences. We store your notification settings, including which push categories you've opted into.
Communications with us. If you contact us by email or feedback form, we keep your messages and responses to assist you.
When you use the Service, we and our service providers automatically collect:
Setup is built around adding people you personally know. When you add a single or invite a comatchmaker, you provide identifying information about that person (their name and phone number or username). We use this information to send the invitation and to match it against existing accounts. By adding someone or sending an invitation, you represent that you have a good-faith reason to believe they would welcome the contact. We do not import your phone's address book or read your contacts; invitations are sent through your device's native SMS composer. If the invited person never signs up, we retain the pending invite record (including the phone number) until you delete it or it expires. People only become part of your matchmaking activity once they have signed up and accepted a connection request.
We use the information we collect to:
Setup is built on trust between people who already know each other, and certain information is visible to other Users by design.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share information with the following categories of recipients:
Profile and Community photos you upload are stored in Firebase Storage and are viewable by other authenticated Users in accordance with Section 5. You may only upload photos of yourself for your own profile and Community images you have the right to use. Photos are limited to 5 MB and standard image formats.
We use commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect the information you provide, including encrypted transmission (HTTPS), Firestore security rules that limit access to authorized Users, and Firebase App Check to deter automated abuse. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee the privacy, security, integrity, or authenticity of any information transmitted to or stored within the Service.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Setup is not liable for any unauthorized access to, disclosure of, alteration of, loss of, deletion of, or destruction of your data — whether resulting from a security breach, hacking, account takeover, third-party service failure, system error, force majeure event, or any other cause. You should not provide sensitive information (such as financial account information, government identification numbers, or health records) through the Service. If we become aware of a security incident affecting your information, we will notify you and applicable authorities to the extent required by law.
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. Some information (such as match history and connection records) is retained even after the related match is closed in order to maintain the integrity of the platform and prevent re-creation of declined or removed connections. We may retain information longer when required to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or protect against fraud. You may request deletion of your account at any time, as described below.
In the app and on the website, you may update your account information, edit your single profile, change your matchmaker profile and notification preferences, remove comatchmakers, leave Communities, leave or close Rooms, and delete matches you created. You may turn off push notifications entirely or by category in your device settings.
Account deletion. You may delete your account at any time from inside the app or via your Singles Portal account on the website. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information except where retention is permitted or required (e.g., to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes).
U.S. state privacy rights. If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, or another U.S. state with comprehensive privacy laws, you may have the right to (a) request access to the personal information we hold about you, (b) request correction of inaccurate personal information, (c) request deletion of your personal information, (d) opt out of "sales" or "sharing" of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising (we do not engage in such sales or sharing), and (e) be free from discrimination for exercising your rights. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@gosetup.org. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
EEA / UK rights. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation gives you rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port, and object to processing of your personal data. Our legal bases for processing are: performance of our contract with you (operating the Service), our legitimate interests (improving the Service, preventing abuse), your consent (e.g., for push notifications and certain analytics), and compliance with legal obligations. To exercise your rights, contact us at privacy@gosetup.org. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
The Service is operated in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.
Setup is intended for Users 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a person under 18, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at privacy@gosetup.org.
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" signal. There is no consensus on how to interpret these signals, so the Service does not currently respond to them. We do not engage in cross-site behavioral advertising.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, by in-app or email notice. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or want to exercise your privacy rights, contact us at privacy@gosetup.org. To report a safety or abuse issue, email safety@gosetup.org.
